the story of
furled leaders Furled leaders have
been around far longer than many anglers realize. Their origins reach back to
the early days of fly fishing when fly lines were woven or furled from
horsehair. The process used to create those early fly lines is very similar to
the one used today to manufacture our modern furled leaders. Of course we now
have a wide variety of materials and equipment that makes the modern furled
leader something that Isaak Walton and Dame Juliana Berners could only have
dreamed of.
first rattle out of the
bag When a furled leader is removed from its packaging one of the
first things that is noticed is its resemblance to a fly line. There taper from
the butt to the tippet end is smooth and continuous. But the memory that most
smooth, tapered mono leaders possess is simply not there. Take a furled leader
by the butt end and give it a snap. It lays out smooth, just like a cast fly
line.

why furled
leaders? Any angler who has thrown a fly line knows the joy of a
controlled loop and a fly that lays out in that right spot. These same anglers
are also all too familiar with the frustration that comes with the cast that
was just not quite right. Leaders sometimes don't turn over as we'd like them
to and may have memory problems. If you have ever had a leader curl up like a
snake when you removed it from the packaging then you know about
furled leaders Construction of furled leaders results in a leaders with the
previously mentioned qualities but also some drawbacks. Special casts are not
easily performed due the furled leader's natural tendency to lay out. One is
also pretty much relegated to using loop-to-loop connections as these leaders
are designed to last a long time and also do not take too kindly to being cut
upon when replacing tippet material. A small loop tied in the end of a piece of
tippet works around this problem.
my
leaders My leaders are furled with thread (except for the larger
salt water and heavy duty use leaders) and have loop connections in each end. A
piece of mono looped on each end allows a smooth transition from leader to
tippet.
