From Mark Suttle (Nephew to Travis) When I was a kid I would stay with my Uncle Travis in the Summer. Back then Atoka or Ada was about the only TV station, and it went off the air after Hee-Haw. But on Saturday or Friday nights the farmers in the area would meet and sit around on kitchen chairs and such out in the front yard and make music. That's the best kind of music, when its played for fun and from the heart. Since this was in the 60's and early 70's naturally I was more into rock and roll, being a big city fellow from Duncan. But, I still remember that I had never heard anything on the radio that sounded any better. Looking back, perhaps that's because there isn't any. These days with satellite TV and in Caney's case paved roads, I wonder if people still get together and make music. Back then It seemed everyone played something. Perhaps Making Music out in the middle of nowhere under the stars is a piece of Americana that won't always be with us. Anyway, one thing is for sure, Uncle Travis was country before country was cool. PS: If you think Travis is good at fiddles, play Dominos with him! Thanks Mark Suttle |
